Some building consultants approached us about the installation of a new Fire Alarm System for Billericay School in Essex.
FIRE RISK ASSESSMENT HIGHLIGHTED ISSUES
The school had had a fire risk assessment carried out which identified that the current fire alarm system was not fully compliant with the current standards. Also, it did not have adequate coverage across the school.
NEW FIRE ALARM SYSTEM TO MEET BRITISH STANDARDS
The school approached the building consultants, PCH Associates Ltd, who asked us to provide a quotation to install a fully compliant Category L2 system which met with the BS5839 Part 1:2017 standards.
ADDRESSABLE FIRE ALARM PANEL
We did the design, supply and installation of the new fire alarm system, including a school lockdown alert alarm.
We used a high performance analogue addressable fire panel - the MxPro 5 by Advanced - which is approved to EN54 Parts 2, 4 and 13. This is a good panel that works well and so Blake’s use it for a lot of our fire alarm installations.
WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF AN ADDRESSABLE FIRE ALARM PANEL?
These panels use intelligent programming to let you assign an “address” to each of more than 800 devices in the system.
Conventional fire alarm systems can only indicate the zone when the alarm is activated. Addressable systems, on the other hand, can identify the exact detector or device that has been activated. This allows the Fire and Rescue service to quickly locate the fire in an emergency - saving time and, ultimately, lives!
LEADING THE PROJECT
We spent approximately 3 months on site. The project required the installation of more than 800 devices and attendance at various site and team meetings.
We kept our own Lead Project Engineer on site throughout. He managed the agency staff we used for the project and other Blake's engineers.
WORKING WITH STAFF AND PUPILS
We provided our own welfare facilities and worked from 2pm-10pm most days, working around the school children and staff to ensure minimal disruption.
We made sure that all staff on site were DBS checked, BAFE approved and held FIA qualifications.
