The Orchard Theatre, operated by Trafalgar Theatres, needed a temporary space capable of hosting 1,091 audience members while the main venue underwent critical RAAC works. The temporary venue posed unique fire safety challenges due to its design and the use of theatrical elements such as smoke machines and linen curtains.

Working with our distributor partner, Illumino Ignis (Kent) Ltd (IIKL), we selected Cygnus SmartNet-Pro Combi Smoke/Heat A1R detectors for their versatility in adapting to complex environments. These detectors played a crucial role in customizing the system to the venue’s specific needs.
Our solution was the result of a collaborative effort involving thorough consultations with the theatre management, local council, and fire authorities. This partnership ensured that the design and implementation phases proceeded without hitches, accommodating necessary adjustments and additions seamlessly.
The installation was executed swiftly, with the Cygnus system of 65 devices set up within a day, followed by comprehensive testing and demonstrations. Key to success for ALL installations is the hands-on training provided to clients. For the Orchard Theatre project, the theatre's stage door crew were trained to be fully versed in operating the system, particularly the advanced functionalities like "Show Mode."

We installed the fire alarm panel right by the stage door so staff can immediately hear and respond to alarms. Directly next to the panel, we mounted a framed Zone Plan and As Fitted Drawing for quick visual access by theatre staff and the Fire Brigade. It shows precise activation locations for fast, easy responses.
We clamped rods with Cygnus detectors onto the lighting trusses to cover the auditorium's high areas, where attaching to the black linen ceiling was impractical. In "Show Mode," these detectors switch to heat-only sensitivity, avoiding false alarms from stage effects like smoke.
We equipped every exit, including stage exits, with Manual Call Points. This ensures both staff and other occupants can immediately evacuate if a fire is detected. This supports fire safety and quick response throughout the venue.
We strategically placed detectors beside the heating tubes running through the Front of House ceilings. Mounted on rods clamped to the metal structure, these detectors are optimally positioned to detect heat without interference from the tubes, ensuring effective monitoring.
We added extra smoke detectors on the lower edges of the linen-draped ceilings, using L Brackets for fast detection at the first sign of fire. These detectors are crucial supplements to the main array along the ceiling's apex, enhancing safety coverage for these high-risk areas.
