Storing CCTV Footage - A Simple One Page Guide For Businesses

Here's Blake's one page guide that outlines the two most common methods of storing CCTV footage.

Written by the experts, in simple language, for busy business owners...

You have two main CCTV storage options - onsite and offsite. Here’s a brief breakdown:

Onsite CCTV storage

If you store your footage locally within your premises, you will:

  • Need a Network Video Recorder (NVR) or hard drive (Blake's supply this for you as part of your installation)
  • Enjoy ease of access to your own recordings

Onsite CCTV storage is the ideal option for:

  • Small / medium businesses
  • Companies on a lower budget
  • Companies that don’t require 24/7 recording

Offsite storage

If you pay for a third party to process and store your camera footage, you will:

  • Need a good internet connection without a data limit to support sending the footage to an offsite storage system
  • Have a third party to host and manage your data for you
  • Benefit from the security of separate physical storage (eg. a local fire will not destroy your CCTV records)

This is perfect for:

  • Larger businesses, hospitals, schools and university campuses etc.
  • Companies that are happy to trade easy access to onsite footage in order to fulfil larger storage needs

Whichever option you choose, you must ensure your onsite or offsite storage complies with DPA guidelines 2018.
