Dummy & DIY Burglar Alarms From A Burglar's POV!

Date: 29 January 2019

We spotted this great tweet and wanted to share it with our blog readers too!

All jokes aside...

When we stopped laughing we realised this is what a criminal sees when he comes across a DIY burglar alarm.

We know a burglar alarm is the best deterrent to casual, low skilled criminals. They don't want to work hard, they want to break in and grab your stuff. But what about the more skilled thief?

Will a fake box or DIY burglar alarm put him off?

The problem with dummy alarm boxes

This robber doesn't glance at your home security, he studies it.

This is his job! He knows the made-up brand names used for fake alarm boxes. And don't think for a minute putting a real brand sticker on will help you. He also knows the shape and size of the bellboxes reputable installers use. A sticker on the wrong box is a dead give away...

Even that flashing LED light won't fool him. It will annoy you when you're up a ladder changing batteries though! Additionally, there's a noticeable difference in sound when you tap on an empty fake box, as opposed to a professionally fitted alarm.

Your home and family are worth more than that!

DIY alarm kits aren't much better...

So what if you decide to install a DIY burglar alarm? You can buy online kits easily and they promise the world - but not all that glitters is gold. There's only so much you can get from a generic, one size fits all approach to 'home security.'

Consider that:

  • There will be basic instructions but they won't be tailored to your home
  • Sensors and monitors need careful placement to work properly and not to cause false alarms
  • Will you be sure that the panel is set up correctly?
  • Are you confident enough to disable a siren tamper?
  • How will you test the system?

Burglars easily bypass DIY alarms that aren't set up well. Your home and family are still at risk! And if the worst happens the DIY store won't care but you will!

Wired or Wireless DIY burglar alarm?

Mains wired alarms need electrical skills to be fitted safely. You will also have a lot of mess!

If it's wireless, how will you know your cloud server is secure and can't be tampered with by a hacker? What backup do you have if your internet or power fails? You won't have a professional with a 4 hour response time to fall back on, like Blake's customers.

Blake's can do the job and ensure the installation is quick, safe and clean!

We've been in the business a long time and seen it all. Our SSAIB and NSI Gold accreditations prove that we provide the best service and equipment. That's what you need to keep your home and family safe!

Comparing the costs

Yes, you may save a bit of money in the beginning. But you won't get total peace of mind which is priceless.

A quality home alarm system from Blake's costs less than you think. Some DIY burglar alarm kits actually cost more than our professionally fitted system! It pays to do your research!
