A series of Fire Risk Assessments alerted Writtle University that some of their Fire Alarm Systems were insufficient.
THE PROBLEM WITH THE UNIVERSITY'S FIRE ALARM
Their existing systems were from lots of different manufacturers with different panels. They also had different levels of compliance.
One of the areas highlighted in the Fire Risk Assessments was the accommodation blocks. So it was a top priority for the University to get these all up to date as fast as possible.
A USER-FRIENDLY FIRE ALARM SYSTEM ON ONE PANEL
Our sister company, Blake Contractors Limited, is the maintenance contractor for the University. So the site manager asked us about installing a new Category L1 Fire Alarm System throughout the halls.
Our quote covered everything from design to commissioning. And ensured all the blocks were compliant with industry code and regulations.
This included installing new Advanced Addressable Systems through all the blocks. And included loft spaces and all the student accommodation rooms.
We also produced up to date building layout plans of the accommodation blocks.
For the Fire Alarm System we used the Advanced MxPro 5. This is a good panel that works well. Blake’s use it for a lot of our fire alarm installations.
The MxPro 5 worked particularly well for the University's needs because:
It is designed to offer more power and performance and to be more user-friendly.
This advanced Fire Panel has a lot more options in its interface. Including configuration capabilities, display, status, and control choices.
This means less time and expense customising a system with peripherals.
ALARM INSTALLATION WITH MINIMAL STUDENT DISRUPTION
We carried out the work to a strict timetable so as not to interfere with any of the University’s normal running procedures.
We also liaised with the University's Facilities Team at every step of the way. This ensured that the University was always in the loop on our progress and the areas we were working in.
WHAT DID THE UNIVERSITY SAY ABOUT THEIR FIRE ALARM?
The work was completed one month AHEAD OF SCHEDULE thanks to the diligence of Blake's Projects Team.
The University's Facilities Team was briefed on the operation of all the systems. These are all on the same control panel, so the system is much easier to use.
The University is happy with the work carried out by our engineers.
