Back in 2019, a gang of thieves that robbed a Basildon shop were jailed for 3 years and 9 months each. One of them got an extra 6 months for burgling a home. Here's how CCTV helped police bring them to justice!
The raid began at 7am. The two males ran at the shocked staff and shouted at them to get to the back of the premises. A female accomplice held the door as the men ripped out two tills and grabbed stock before making off.
Detective Constable Nicholas May said:
"Understandably, this robbery was a very frightening experience for the member of staff who was confronted by these three individuals."
A combination of HD CCTV images and fingerprints identified the trio and they were all arrested later the same day.
The police discovered one of the gang wearing a watch stolen during a house burglary in Basildon. Further property from that offence was recovered from his address. This might never have been returned to the owner if not for the CCTV!
DC May commented:
"The strong evidence secured ensured we were able to act quickly, find those responsible and hold them to account for their actions."
As this case shows, good quality HD CCTV images can assist police to capture and convict criminals. And not just those who target commercial premises. A residential victim will be getting his watch and other possessions back thanks to this business owner's savvy security choices!
As a shop or business reliant on the public, you have to be open and accessible. But with CCTV that doesn't mean vulnerable. It's the best way to protect your staff and stock but still welcome customers.
Security cameras act as a strong visual deterrent to all kinds of crime. Low level pilfering can dent profits, but CCTV will put off sticky fingers. Robbers looking for an easy target will go elsewhere. A reduction in anti-social behaviour can have a healthy effect on your bottom line!
But you can't just buy any old camera and put it on the wall. There are things to consider...
