Chelmsford Burglaries – The Latest Figures

It’s a bit of good news this time. Between June 2024 and May 2025, there were approximately 2,000 burglary incidents across the CM postcodes — a substantial 29.1 per cent drop compared to the previous year. (Source: Plumplot)

That said, in the year ending September 2023, there were still 639 residential burglaries, making up around 4 per cent of all crime in Chelmsford. (Source: Varbes)

To put that into perspective, back in September 2022, there were 41 burglaries reported in a single month — averaging 1.37 break-ins per day. So while the trend may be improving, the risks remain very real.

• 48% of victimised retail premises were targeted weekly or more
• 43% experienced threats or assaults against staff
• Almost 39% of incidents were not reported to police

Closer to home, Essex Police has focused patrols and business crime support in Chelmsford's retail zones — especially Melbourne Park, Great Baddow and the City Centre — to protect local premises and reduce theft.

Recent data doesn’t break down incidents by ward, but we know certain areas have higher vulnerability — particularly high‑traffic zones near shops and supermarkets. The Chelmsford town centre, with its busier streets, remains especially at risk.
