Making fire safety for businesses easier to understand
Below you can find a short summary of what every business owner needs to know:
The Responsible Person
If you are an employer or have any degree of control over a premises, you are responsible under Fire Safety Legislation for the safety of the people and the property - you are described as the Responsible Person.
The Responsible Person may be referred to as the Duty Holder in Scotland and Appropriate Person in Northern Ireland.
The Responsible Person may be fined or prosecuted if they fail to comply with the law.
Fire Risk Assessments
You must carry out a Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) to identify risks, provide solutions and look at precautions you have in place to determine whether they are suitable.
Anyone can carry out a FRA but you can hire a professional Fire Risk Assessor, if you don't feel comfortable.
Following the FRA, a plan must be produced to outline any actions that need to be taken. More importantly, that plan must be acted upon!
Fire safety equipment
Do you have the right equipment for your premises?
Is it in the right location?
Is it regularly maintained to ensure it works when you need it most?
For fire equipment and services, the Fire Industry Association recommends third party certificated suppliers.
It's vital that the fire safety equipment and services that you use are of good quality and are maintained to a high standard.
The supplier you choose should be trained, checked and competent.
Third party certifications mean a supplier has been independently assessed and the quality of their work has been verified as being to a suitable standard.
If you cannot prove that you have used a competent supplier, you may have difficulty getting a full insurance payment if you put in a claim.
The FIA is the largest fire protection association in the UK.
Members are required to have third party certifications. Choosing a member of the FIA ensures you are dealing with an exceptional supplier and your business will comply with the Law!
