The management company of an Oxford Retail Park contacted Blake's to install an access control solution after experiencing an unusual issue...
Their problem was that unauthorised vehicles were parking in the loading area and car park behind the retail units. Once they managed to gain access, it was very hard to get them to leave.
Access to the Retail Park was via a padlocked gate.
Due to the Retail Park having some large, well-known megastores, there were deliveries 24/7. At all hours of the day and night, drivers had to get out of their cabs, remove the padlock, drive through and then remember to return to the gate and put the padlock back on again.
Often they would forget to close and padlock the gate, leaving it open for unauthorised vehicles to gain access.
Blake’s designed a system of three automatic bollards which are operated by an access control system.
All of the delivery drivers are given a code. They drive up to the control panel, tap in their code and wait for the traffic lights to turn green, signifying that the bollards have retracted and it's safe to proceed.
Once they drive their vehicle through, the bollards automatically rise up again and the process is repeated for their return journey to exit the site.
If a visitor arrives and doesn't know the code, there is a GSM intercom system which is linked to every retail unit and it is possible to grant access that way.
All the electrical works, ground works, bollard installation, service and maintenance were carried out by Blake Fire & Security Systems, or their parent company, Blake Contractors Ltd.
Automatic Access Control Bollards come in various sizes and strengths and Blake’s can install whatever type of system your business requires.
Their purpose is to control traffic and, increasingly, they are being used to stop terrorist attacks that use vehicles.
Here’s a video produced by FAAC UK. It shows what happens if a lorry tries to drive through an automatic bollard to gain access to a restricted area...
Whilst the Automatic Access Control Bollards we installed at the Oxford Retail Park are not as powerful as the example above, they did manage to stop a people carrier.
