Pet Friendly Alarm Systems - A Quick Guide To Cut Through The Noise

Date: 28 March 2022

This guide outlines everything you need to know in an 8-minute nutshell. You'll soon be equipped to choose the right system to keep your home, family and trusted companions safe!

By now you probably know that a regular alarm system isn't always compatible with pets because of the increased risk of false alarms.

And you've heard pet friendly alarm systems can save the day!

But you're stuck on what to do next... what options are available and which is right for you and your pets?

Pet Friendly Alarm Systems

In a nutshell, what is a pet friendly alarm system?

There are a few features unique to a pet friendly system and many similarities. Here's the lowdown, in a nutshell. A pet friendly system:

  • Protects your home from burglars and reduces the risk of false alarms caused by pets
  • The alarm control panel (the box you type your pin into) is identical to that of an ordinary alarm system
  • Utilises special PIR (Passive Infra-Red) sensors that can be manipulated to ignore movement from your pets
  • Has capability for anyone with any kind of pet. That means you're covered whether you own a Great Dane, kitten or hamster!

Now you have a broad idea of what a pet friendly system is, let's explore the key points of the most popular options...

What pet friendly alarm options are available?

Here we cover 2 options.

Option 1 - Weight detection

When monitoring a room for intruders, your PIR detectors analyse the size and shape of objects in the room and make a judgement on the weight of said objects.

The detectors can be calibrated by professional installers to ignore particular sizes of object. For example ignoring all objects below a certain limit, say 40kg, would work for large dogs.

So, when Dougie the Dalmatian comes plodding into the living room and decides he wants to take a nap on the sofa, your alarm won't be triggered and your neighbours won't be disturbed by a false alarm!

On the other hand, if the PIR sensor detects anything heavier, like a human who has broken in, the alarm will be triggered.

Clever!

Best for: Homeowners with cats and dogs (or any free roaming animal that can jump)

Option 2 - Height detection

PIR detectors can also be set up to ignore objects below a certain height so your pet can pass underneath the sensor without triggering the alarm.

A professional can set up your detectors to:

  • Monitor motion from windows and doors so the alarm will be triggered if a burglar tries to break in
  • Ignore motion under a certain height so your bird cage, hamster cage or tortoise pen go undetected!

Best for: Homeowners with pets in cages or static enclosures such as reptiles, birds and rodents. NOT suitable for free-roaming pets (see option 1 above)

Pet friendly alarm prices

Pet friendly alarms aren't 'one size fits all' solutions, and therefore there's no fixed cost.

The price of your system will vary depending on:

  • Which system you need based on the 2 options outlined above
  • The size of your home
  • The number of rooms inside your home
  • The number of sensors required based on the layout of your windows and doors

Like any good security system, your pet friendly alarm should be tailored to your home!

Can I install it myself?

Without beating around the bush, no!

You could buy an 'out of the box' kit off the internet and give it your best DIY installation attempt...

But...

You are likely to pay twice. Inevitably, you will have to call in the professionals to fix a botched job. Sorry, but we're talking about sophisticated equipment here that is very difficult for a layperson to setup.

Even choosing a general-purpose pet alarm kit is doomed to failure. It won't be advanced enough to tell the difference between a pet and an intruder!

Professional installations avoid this frustration...

Here are a few of the frustrations you may experience if you decide to give a DIY installation a go...

The only way to ensure your family and home are properly protected is to hire a professional installer - better yet, an NSI or SSAIB accredited installer!
