The latest crime figures are out for Southend-on-Sea. Is your family home safe from burglary threats? Should you be worried? We compare the most recent numbers and ask, is your burglar deterrent good enough?
Overall Essex burglary figures
The good news. Across Essex, there were 1,043 burglaries in December 2018. This improved on November's number of 1,231 and October's 1,168.
What could be the reason for this? It's not that robbers take a break for the holiday season!
Around Christmas we get reminders and advice around home security and burglar deterrents. As we stock up on gifts and goodies we all try to be more careful. This results in fewer opportunities for thieves. The trouble is, we often put our good practices away with the tinsel!
The local burglary report in Southend-on-Sea
The not so good news. Sadly, homes in SS postcodes saw a rise in raids. Burglaries jumped up by 10 per cent in a month, from 280 in November to 308 in December!
The truth is, 308 families in Southend had Christmas ruined by a robber. And not just this Christmas, the bad memory will cast a shadow over future celebrations too.
The chart below shows the pattern for the last half of 2018 and it'snot pretty.
From June there was a steady rise which then spiked in October. What happened? The clocks changing and longer hours of darkness are two factors.
What then looks like a drop in November is actually a return to the month on month increase. And don't forget, these figures don't count victims that didn't report their robbery!
