Planning your own Commercial CCTV system is a tricky thing to do if you're not an expert.
That's why we've put together this guide - to help you make the right decision for your business.
So, first you have to ask yourself, 'What do I need my CCTV system to do?'
Without a set of primary security goals in mind, you’re asking for nothing more than a ‘one size fits all’ CCTV system that can do a little bit of everything – but doesn’t really address your areas of concern.
What do we mean by ‘primary security goals’?
Your goals could include:
This list isn't exhaustive, in fact, one of our customers used CCTV to save their engineer from 4 trips a day to check a misbehaving watercourse - saving them time and money!
These goals lay the foundation for your security system and help to identify the features you require.
For an obvious example of how goals influence system design, let’s consider the following:
A system designed to monitor access in and out of your premises will be designed and installed differently to a system used to monitor staff productivity inside the building.
Monitoring access in and out of your premises may require night vision to see in the evenings. However, a camera monitoring productivity inside a lit building isn't going to need this feature.
Getting the wrong camera in this situation could mean you're paying for more expensive night vision that you don't actually need. Alternatively, purchasing a CCTV kit off the shelf means the cameras may be lacking critical features!
Take a moment to consider your goals. Write down everything a CCTV system could do for your business, then take out the red pen.
Break it into 3 parts:
1. Must-haves
2. Nice-to-haves
3. Luxuries
Then, get rid of the unnecessary luxuries and cross out the excessive nice-to-haves.
It’s up to you to identify your primary security goals but we think it's best to leave it to the professionals to work out how best to achieve them.
Give your list of goals to an accredited CCTV installer, they'll be able to craft the right system to fit your requirements!
