Fire Doors for St George's Hospital in Tooting, London
The Facilities Team at St. George’s Hospital, one of London’s busiest, approached us about their fire doors in the Atkinson Morley Wing.
The existing fire doors were damaged and no longer compliant with British Standards. They had reached the end of their lifecycle and needed to be replaced.
Clearly, a huge safety issue. In the event of a fire, these doors may not have resisted the fire for long enough to give occupants time to escape AND the emergency services time to respond.
They needed a certified company to manage this large project. One capable of carrying out the works in an operational hospital. With 9,000 dedicated staff caring for patients around the clock… that’s a major consideration!
Fully certified, qualified and experienced with an extensive track record of working alongside busy schools, Blake Fire & Security were a great choice.
So the Facilities Team approached us and we took on the challenge.
We started this project a month before COVID struck. With the project being a matter of fire safety and the works being completed of the utmost importance, we were categorised as key workers and were able to continue the project throughout this difficult period.
COVID restrictions meant we had to be aware of the hospital staff working and moving around the wing and keep out of their way as and when required.
Working alongside the fantastic facilities team and NHS staff in the Atkinson Morley Wing, we supplied and installed 83 new certified fire door sets.
Of course, these were installed under BM Trada certification. The doors were supplied by SDS (Specialist Door Solutions), part of their Dfendoor range.
The DFendoor range is designed and manufactured to meet the exacting Trada Q-Mark. One of the most rigorous certification processes for building and construction products. SDS DFendoor is Q-Mark standard.
These were plastic wrapped, impact-resistant doors, crucial to maintaining fire door compliance AND infection control throughout the busy areas of the hospital in the height of COVID.
BM TRADA is a UKAS accredited certification body, whose role is to raise the on-going standard of fire doors ensuring the product’s fire resistance capabilities are maintained. Ultimately to stop fires spreading, keep buildings and their occupants safe!
The client was very pleased with the works carried out. Since then, it has been our pleasure to continue working with the Facilities Team on their ongoing projects in one of London's busiest hospitals.
