Doing 'The Sums' For School Fire Safety Risk Assessments

Date: 26 July 2024
Recently, a Responsible Person at a school contacted Blake's in regards to a Fire Risk Assessment. Officials asked them to confirm they'd done their 5 year fire survey...
Cue panic stations!!!
The RP was wondering if Blake's could help...
Find out how to subtract the worry, add knowledge and achieve school fire safety success!

So many questions!

Such an email from officials can lead to a flurry of urgent thoughts:

  • What survey?
  • Is it different from the general risk assessment?
  • How often are they needed?
  • Who should do them?
  • What documents do we need?
  • Where should we file them?
  • Will the caretaker know?
  • Why are they asking me?!

Every Responsible Person in a school or business carries a heavy load. There are vital laws and regulations to be aware of and harsh penalties for falling short in your duty of care. Penalties you are personally liable for. That, plus your day to day tasks...

Being the RP + day job = STRESS!

Lesson 1 in School Fire Safety

If you're new to the role of Responsible Person you should review the risk assessment thoroughly to check it is up to date and fit for purpose.

You are also required to update the relevant parts of your document and processes after any

  • changes to the layout or use of your building(s)
  • near-misses or
  • incidents of fire.

As each school or business is different there are no set review dates by law.

Best practice (and what our confused Responsible Person is being asked to confirm) is to check and update the whole Risk Assessment on a regular basis. This particular Essex authority requires that every 5 years.

Think of it as tidying up as you go but having a scheduled deep clean every 5 years. Or, in school terms, revising your topics regularly for the big exam!
